SIX-WHEEL DRIVE CRANE TRUCK ARRIVES IN NZ

The latest addition to the Aeris Global Field Service fleet has just landed in NZ.

The hashtag#Scania G 500 B6x6 HZ was custom-built in Sweden to Aeris Global specifications. It features a 500hp Euro 6 engine coupled to a G33CM automatic gearbox and numerous options engineered at the factory specifically for off-road crane operation.

The rig will be fitted with a hashtag#Palfinger PK 370 TEC Knuckle Boom Crane with a lifting moment of 343.3kNm (35mt) and includes front and rear outriggers.

The crane features continuous slew and an impressive array of options including the proprietary HPSC (High Performance Stability) system developed by Palfinger. The system uses a “real data algorithm” to calculate the maximum lifting capacity at each point of the fully variable working range.

The truck and crane will be delivered to the highly experienced and capable hands of T. L. MacLean Limited in Mosgiel to couple the crane and construct the purpose-built deck.

The rig is expected to be complete by the end of November and will operate throughout NZ.

Its primary role is to deliver, assemble, install and service aerators, mixers, and decanters and safe access equipment; deliver and collect export and import consignments to and from port; transport portable site offices to worksites; backload materials from suppliers and perform miscellaneous logistics duties.

otterpontoon Gen-2 enters production

The latest product development from the Wanaka based Aeris Global design team is a 2nd generation version of the popular otterpontoon-Safe Access Platform.

NOTHING SPEAKS LOUDER THAN RESULTS!

Proven performance at one site is often the catalyst for installation at others.

This has repeatedly proven to be the case with aerdisc® as one installation routinely leads to another.

All process industries are constantly in search of efficiency gains and none-more-so than wastewater treatment.

aerdisc® is achieving ground-breaking gains in terms of oxygen transfer efficiency, prevention of short-circuiting, rag-free operation and ease of access.

aerdisc® performance speaks for itself!

Quality is a choice. Leading organisations choose aerdisc®

EFFICIENT AERATION TRANSFERS MORE OXYGEN PER KW OF ENERGY

At risk of stating the patently obvious, this message must be restated and
emphasised because hundreds of WWTP’s across Australasia are collectively burning millions of dollars of energy running low-efficiency aerators.

We visit many plants suffering from low DO and yet paying huge energy bills.
Aeration is central to aerobic wastewater treatment and is often the highest consumer of energy, therefore, efficient aeration is fundamental to reducing operational costs.

Aeration efficiency is measured in kgO2/kWh therefore every percentage INCREASE in efficiency is a percentage DECREASE in energy consumption.

An aerator with DOUBLE the efficiency of another will HALVE energy consumption. Alternatively, it can double the capacity of a plant for the same energy consumption.

Replacing out-moded aerators with modern, high-efficiency aerators can dramatically reduce energy consumption and boost plant capacity.

Contact Aeris Global to discover how efficient aerators can reduce energy, increase plant capacity and extend plant life.

ONE MONTH WAS LONG ENOUGH FOR WAGGA WAGGA

After only one month into a six-month aerdisc® trial at Forest Hill STP, Wagga Wagga City Council decided there was no reason to wait a further five-months and decided to buy two!

Aeris Global installed one aerdisc® in the Pasveer Ditch at Forest Hill and council observed immediate results in terms of improvements in ditch velocity and exceptionally low levels of spray.

After one month of operation the process improvements were so significant council decided to progress towards procurement of two aerdisc® aerators without further delay.

BEAUTIFUL WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANTS

Beautiful and wastewater may not be words we use together in everyday conversation but for our Field Service Team it’s commonplace.

Some of the sites our team get to visit are simply stunning!

Interestingly, wastewater treatment plants are often located in the most picturesque settings. The images show some picture-perfect examples.

AERIS GLOBAL WIN NORTH EAST WATER TENDER

Following a rigorous tender process Aeris Global is proud to have been awarded the contract to provide aeration upgrades to North East Water wastewater treatment plants.

The comprehensive project involves various sites across North-East Victoria and will incorporate a combination of aerdisc Directional Aerators and aquaturbo Surface Aerators.

North East Water serves an area of roughly 20,000 km2 with approximately 120,000 people in 39 towns with 22 wastewater treatment plants.

100th NZ AERDISC INSTALLED AT SAME COUNCIL AS FIRST

The first aerdisc® Directional Aerator was installed three years ago at Cromwell WWTP for Central Otago District Council.

As a fitting tribute to them, today the 100th aerdisc® was installed at their Roxburgh plant.

Five aerdisc® aerators are in operation at Cromwell and have proven to be a resounding success with exceptional oxygen transfer, elimination of short-circuiting, zero downtime, and not a fibre of rag on the discs.

aerdisc® is now operating in most NZ councils as well as multiple industrial sites.

The market uptake rate across the Tasman has been equally remarkable with over 30 units in operation across five states with many more in production, transit or pending.

Interestingly, the range of aerdisc® applications in Australia has been more diverse than NZ with installations including stormwater lagoons, Pasveer ditches and even IDEA basins.

WEST AUSTRALIAN LOW-SPEED AERATOR PROJECTS PROGRESS AT PACE

The first quarter of 2025 has been a hectic time for the Aeris Global Field
Services Team with two major oxidation ditch projects occurring simultaneously.

The first two of four 132kW aquaturbo® AER-GD Low-speed Surface Aerators were installed at Mandurah, at the same time as the first two of six 160kW units were installed at Alkimos.

All aerators include the exceptional Hansen P4 Industrial Gearbox and WEG W22 Electric Motor.

Both projects feature the proprietary Aeris Global Aerator Mounting System. The Insertable Yoke proved invaluable for installing the impeller and Mounting Frame in combination.

Images show the process of lifting the impeller and Mounting Frame together followed by connection of the drive and removal of the Yoke.

Considering the total assembly weights over 6-tonnes, the Yoke made lightwork of an otherwise fiddly task.

The Insertable Yoke also allows disconnection and removal of the drive while the impeller remains in position but above the flow of water in the ditch.

The removable Mounting Frame allows installation and removal of the entire aerator while the plant remains online. The Mounting Frame creates a square opening in the endcap of sufficient size to allow the aerator impeller to pass through.

AERDISC IMPROVES EFFICIENCY OF DIFFUSED AERATION IN IDEA BASIN

Wingecarribee Shire Council is currently upgrading the Mossvale wastewater treatment plant due to overloading.

They were struggling to maintain compliance during the upgrade process. Not surprising considering the existing plant was designed for 9,000EP (Equivalent Population) but is currently treating 16,000EP!

The two IDEA (Intermittently Decanted Extended Aeration) basins with a water level of less than 2.5m are installed with membrane diffusers, which were failing to meet the oxygen demand.

Ian Freere, Wastewater Treatment Supervisor for Wingecarribee Shire Council
investigated options for supplemental aeration during the upgrade process and recalled seeing the aerdisc® Directional Aerator at Ozwater’23 in Sydney so contacted Aeris Global Australia.

This was a unique application because it required an aeration technology able to operate above the existing membrane diffusers but without dislodging or damaging them and certainly not reducing their efficiency.

Aeris Global theorised the introduction of horizontal velocity using aerdisc® would not only provide supplemental aeration but would also improve the efficiency of the diffused air system.

aerdisc® is a directional aerator and typically operates in shallow water (<2.5m) so a strong discharge velocity is necessary to maximise the bubble dwell time.

In the absence of a horizontal velocity, bubbles exiting membrane diffusers will take a beeline to the surface so, correspondingly, bubble dwell time will be low and oxygen transfer efficiency poor.

Bubbles coalesce almost immediately without horizontal velocity and each doubling of bubble size results in a 400% increase in bubble rise rate!

Once again aerdisc® delivered the results by dramatically improving the performance of the plant within days.

IMAGINE AN AERATOR THAT DOESN’T RAG

aerdisc® is 100% rag-free!

Ragging is a bane in the life of every wastewater treatment plant operator.

When developing aerdisc®, we prepared a design brief and No.1 on the list was “Resistance to ragging”.

It was a lofty goal considering ANYTHING immersed in wastewater, or intercepting the flow of wastewater, is susceptible to ragging; more-so if moving and, worse-still if rotating.

aerdisc® is immersed 300mm, rotating at 69rpm and often installed in unscreened plants so should be highly vulnerable to ragging.

However, the unique disc design has no capacity to capture rag and in-fact repels rag and other debris due to the formation of a boundary layer at the periphery of each disc.

At Central Otago District Council’s Cromwell plant, five aerdisc® aerators have been operating continuously for almost 3-years in ponds, heavily laden with rag and settled deposits and yet there is not a fibre of rag on the discs.

We originally aimed for resistance to ragging but can now state, ELIMINATION of ragging.

RELAXED BENDIGO VIBE CONTINUES

Once again WIOA Bendigo has lived up to its reputation as the friendly show.

A constant stream of relaxed delegates, visitors and fellow exhibitors called in for a chat with the Aeris Global Australia Team.

We were proud to display the world-leading aquaturbo Surface Aerator, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

Also on display was the groundbreaking aerdisc Directional Aerator including two full-size aerdisc rotors on the Aeris Global truck parked at the show entrance.

IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN: WIOA BENDIGO!

The Victoria Water Industry Operations Conference & Exhibition will be held next week!

The relaxed vibe is a hallmark of all WIOA events, making them a pleasure to attend as an exhibitor, delegate or visitor.

Aeris Global is proud to be an exhibitor again at this years’ event.

I will be joined on the stand by experienced team members Holly Byrne and Darrel Clark. Holly leads the project team and Darrel manages Field Services.

If attending, please drop in for a chat at Stand 134.

FAST-TRACK AERATORS PROVE POPULAR

The ability to deliver and install aerators at short-notice has been well received by municipal and industrial clients alike, and in some cases has proven a lifesaver.

Aeris Global currently has over 1,000kW of aquaturbo® Model AER-AS Floating Surface Aerators and 30 aerdisc® Directional Aerators in stock.

Many aeration projects also incorporate mixers, so the two fastest moving model variants have been added to the Aeris Global stock range; these being aquaturbo® MIX-AS 11kW and 22kW.

If your need is IMMEDIATE, we can delivery.

TOUR OF BROMLEY WWTP BY WIOG MEMBERS

Yesterday, I was delighted to speak as part of the WIOG (Water Industry Operators Group) tour of Christchurch City Councils, Bromley Wastewater Treatment.

Last week Aeris Global installed its FIRST aerator in the Oxidation Ponds at Bromley. After less than a week of operation the aerdisc Directional Aerator is already impressing many observers including the WIOG visitors.

Aeris Global was not involved with the supply or installation of any other aerators in the Oxidation Ponds.

However, we were intimately involved with other aspects of the plant following the tragic fire in 2021, which destroyed two trickling filters.

I was asked to speak about our contract to convert two of the plants 49m diameter clarifiers into high-energy aerobic reactors by installing 600kW of aquaturbo surface aerators.

In technical terms, this was not a particularly challenging project but logistically, it was near impossible!

The fire occurred on 1 Nov 2021, and we were awarded the contract on Christmas Eve, but only on the condition the plant was fully operational by 31 Mar 2022.

Multiple key suppliers were asked to slash normal lead-times in the interest of supporting a council in crisis.

14-tonne of equipment was airfreighted from various locations in the world at a total cost of over $600,000!

True to our word, the plant was commissioned on 31 Mar 2022.

SOUTHERNMOST AERDISC INSTALLED AT BLUFF WWTP

This week the Aeris Global Field Services Team installed an aerdisc® Directional Aerator at Bluff for Invercargill City Council. Bluff is the Southernmost wastewater treatment plant in mainland New Zealand.

As well as being world famous for its oysters, Bluff, or Stirling Point to be exact, marks the Southern end of State Highway 1.

The Bluff Hill Climb is one of the most gruelling stages on the Tour of Southand and to win it is regarded as a huge achievement and a highlight in the career of any cyclist.

The aerdisc® installation pic shows Bluff Hill in the background and the landscape pic shows the view from Bluff Hill lookout.

AERDISC MOORING OPTIONS DELIGHT END-USERS

aerdisc® has proven its diversity in terms of process applications but is also delighting end-users with a seemingly endless array of mooring options.

The unique multi-directional, A-Frame swing-arm can be attached to any one of three positions on the pontoon to suit to the required vector-of-thrust: Inline, Lefthand or Righthand.

After selecting the desired configuration, the exact vector-of-thrust can be adjusted over a wide range of angles.

If requirements change, an alternative configuration can be selected at any time.

The aerdisc® swing-arm is designed to allow the aerator to swivel to the berm for inspection, housekeeping or crane connection.

Lifting the aerator does not require swing-arm or electrical disconnection.

Tension Cables are used when a remote installation or extreme water level variation does not allow use of the preferred swing-arm mounting system.

Linkage Arms are used for installation in a Pasveer Ditch or other narrow channel applications. The Linkage Arms pivot to suit water level variations.

Please enquire about our trial units for lagoon, ditch, IDEA or any other application you can think of.

If you have a site where low DO, odour, ragging, or short-circuiting is a problem, please consider trialling an aerdisc® and evaluating the results on a try-before-you-buy basis.

Aeris Global Field Services will mechanically install the trial aerator. At the conclusion of the 6-month trial the host will have the right to purchase, but not the obligation.

To secure an aerdisc® for your wastewater facility please reach out to Holly Byrne, our aerdisc® Australasian Trial Program Coordinator, at holly@aeris.global

NORTHLAND IS SPECTACULAR!

Last week I joined the team to travel around Northland as part of the aerdisc® nationwide roadshow and we were blown away by the place.

Not only by the breathtaking sunsets and scenery but also by the amazing hospitality we were shown along the way.

Grassroots New Zealand is truly a special place. Made me proud to be a kiwi!

The sunset pics show the view from our hotel in Ōmāpere. Absolutely awe-inspiring!

It was a balmy night, so we sat on the beach till well after dark.

AERDISC DIVERSITY CONTINUES TO IMPRESS

aerdisc® is only one product but is proving to have the diversity of many.

Regardless of where aerdisc® is installed, it has the uncanny ability of getting the job done.

Lagoon installations on both sides of the Tasman are plentiful with applications many and varied.

More recent additions to the growing range of applications are Pasveer Ditch and IDEA basins.

Last year Shoalhaven Water installed the first two aerdisc® aerators in a Pasveer Ditch at their Vincentia plant.

Earlier this year South Burnett Regional Council in Queensland installed an aerdisc® at their Nanango WWTP.

Both installations have been a great success.

The latest example of aerdisc® diversity is at Wingecarribee Shire Council, where one unit was installed in an IDEA (Intermittently Decanted Extended Aeration) basin at Mossvale STP.

The unique application involved the aerdisc® operating above the existing membrane diffusers, which were failing to meet the oxygen demand.

One again aerdisc® delivered the results by dramatically improving the performance of the plant within days.

AERDISC IS THE PERFECT CHOICE TO LAND-RICH COUNTRIES

Countries such as New Zealand and Australia have land, so we tend to construct horizontally, because it’s less expensive. Shallow, multi-hectare lagoons are commonplace for us. More densely populated countries prefer a smaller footprint so tend to construct vertically.

New Zealand has 330 council operated wastewater treatment plants and Australia has 720, giving a total of 1,050 plants.

Industrial wastewater treatment plants throughout the region greatly increase this number.

Many of these plants include lagoons, in some form, and many of those have an oxygen demand. This demand is met by natural and/or mechanical aeration. As flow and loadings increase, oxidation, stabilisation, and facultative lagoons are often converted from natural to mechanical aeration.

Most lagoons in New Zealand and Australia are earthen constructed with clay liners. However, an increasing number are constructed with membrane liners or retrofitted with membrane.

Often, the lagoons are unscreened, and many are laden with settled deposits. This is slowly changing in accordance with availability of funding for new headworks and regular sludge dredging.

To function and perform effectively in this environment an aerator must have high oxygen transfer efficiency; a strong horizontal discharge with a high pump rate to prevent short-circuiting, but with no risk of damaging fragile clay liners; the ability to operate in totally unscreened lagoons without ragging, even when overloaded with settled deposits.

aerdisc® was specifically developed by Aeris Global to fill the need for an efficient, shallow water directional aerator because little work had been done in this design space for decades.

SFA-Enviro visits NZ’s environs

Last week, Aeris Global was delighted to host senior executives from SFA-Enviro companies in France, Belgium and the USA.

SFA-Enviro incorporates Aquasystems International in Belgium and Aquaturbo Systems in the USA; manufacturers of the world-leading aquaturbo product range. SFA-Enviro forms part of the giant, Paris based SFA Group.

The attached picture, taken at Lake Pukaki shows, from right to left, Aurélien Goyeau, CEO of SFA-Enviro; Elke Lemmens, COO of Aquasystems International; Miguel Perez, COO of Aquaturbo Systems and Bruce Henley, MD of Aeris Global.

The remarkable, glacial fed, Lake Pukaki turns a beautiful turquoise colour as sunlight is absorbed and scattered by the glacial silts. The silt, known as glacial flour, is so fine it remains in suspension and therefore exposed to the sun’s rays.

Last Wednesday was a perfect opportunity to showcase this phenomenon as the Mackenzie Country turned on a glorious day. Lake Pukaki is one of the top three clearest waters in the world.

SENSATIONAL 2024 FOR AERIS GLOBAL

Thanks, from all the team at Aeris Global Limited in Wanaka and Aeris Global Australia Pty Limited in Melbourne for a sensational 2024!

The two companies have completed a record volume of projects and have been awarded a record volume of new contracts for the 2024 calendar year.

2025 has kicked off the same way 2024 ended, so looks set to eclipse all past years.

aquaturbo remains the world’s leading mechanical aeration brand and the Aeris Global designed and manufactured aerdisc Directional Aerator is taking the world by storm.

We wish all clients, consultants, contractors, partners and colleagues a successful 2025.

aerdisc® is making more waves across the ditch

Last week, Aeris Global installed another aerdisc® Directional Aerator in a Pasveer Ditch. This time at Nanango WWTP for South Burnett Regional Council in Queensland.

aerdisc® was developed primarily for pond-based treatment processes but has proven equally adept for Pasveer Ditch applications.

Last year Shoalhaven Water installed the first two aerdisc® aerators in a Pasveer Ditch at their Vincentia plant and were impressed by the performance.

Upon startup the results were virtually immediate with a dramatic increase in ditch velocity.

In the following days operators determined the aeration time could be halved in accordance with the superior oxygen transfer efficiency of aerdisc®.

Judging by the Nanango video shared with this post, aerdisc® seems certain to impress again.

Please enquire about our trial units for pond and ditch applications.

If you have a site where low DO, odour, ragging, or short-circuiting is a problem, please consider trailing an aerdisc® and evaluating the results on a try-before-you-buy basis.

Aeris Global Field Services will mechanically install the trial aerator. At the conclusion of the 6-month trial the host will have the right to purchase, but not the obligation.

To secure an aerdisc® for your wastewater facility please reach out to Holly Anderson, our aerdisc® Australasian Trial Program Coordinator, at holly@aeris.global

AERDISC IMPRESSES CORDE AT LEESTON WWTP

Last month Aeris Global installed an aerdisc at Selwyn District Council’s Leeston Wastewater Treatment Plant and produced immediate results.

Thomas Prins, Corde NZ, Operations Manager – Wastewater, comments as follows:

“The aerdisc aerator recently installed at Leeston wastewater pond has dramatically increased usage of the pond. We noticed all dead zones and short circuiting have been eliminated and the overall pond colour has changed.

The 7.5kW aerdisc has increased the DO even though it replaced an old 11kW aerator and maintains the DO when all other aerators are powered off. The addition of DO control will provide better control and save energy.

aerdisc has very good efficiency and is completely rag-free so is a great step into the future of wastewater treatment pond aeration.”

Ashburton WWTP – BEFORE & AFTER aerdisc®

In December 2023, the ADC’s Oxidation Pond faced a critical need for aeration improvement. The pond was experiencing short-circuiting, stagnant zones, low oxygen levels, and a high risk of the pond flipping.

Aeris Global responded quickly by installing three aerdisc® directional aerators. Before installation, DO levels were critically low at 0.3 to 0.5 mg/L. Within days DO levels rose to 2 to 5 mg/L, pond circulation and health were transformed.

Following the success of the Oxidation Pond, council made the decision to replace all ten 7.8kW aerators (78kW) in the lifeless Aeration Pond, which ran 24/7 and struggled to achieve a DO above 0.1 mg/L.

After the installation of four aerdisc® aerators with a total energy of only 30kW the change was significant within days. The Dissolved Oxygen increased from 0.1 to 2.55 mg/L, complete mix conditions were restored, and short-circuiting was eliminated.

“aerdisc brought our ponds back to life. We’ve seen a major improvement in DO levels, no short-circuiting, better sludge distribution, and the removal of noxious odours – results that exceeded our expectations.”

Nathan Harvey, Projects and Compliance Engineer, Ashburton District Council

DO YOU NEED AERATORS BEFORE CHRISTMAS?

SHORT-CIRCUITING IS THE ARCH-ENEMY OF ANY FLOW-THRU POND

Therefore, PREVENTION of short-circuiting can provide the GREATEST SINGLE GAIN in pond performance.

When optimising the process potential of any flow-thru pond system, RESIDENCE TIME IS KING!

Residence Time is a measure of the average length of time a water molecule resides in a steady state reactor.

The goal is for the actual residence time to equal the theoretical residence time.

Theoretical Residence Time (Tr) = Volume V (m3) / Flow Q (m3/d)
For example: (V) 10,000m3 / (Q) 1,000m3/d = (Tr) 10days

If short-circuiting is allowed to occur the actual residence time can often be measured in MINUTES rather than DAYS!

Effective aerobic biodegradation of organic contaminants requires a healthy aerobic bacterial environment, and TIME.

Short-circuiting effectively steals time by allowing influent to take a beeline between the inlet and outlet and, in-doing-so, pass thru largely unimpeded.

At best the resultant effluent has incomplete breakdown of organic matter and at worst is totally untreated.

To make matters worse, the unwanted byproducts of short-circuiting are quiescence and subsequent deposition. Quiescence allows the formation of stagnant, putrid smelling zones.

Deposition halts aerobic activity and promotes anaerobic delay, rising sludge, and potential carryover of floating sludge at the outlet. Deposition also reduces pond volume.

aerdisc® is purpose-designed to prevent short-circuiting with a plume length of over 180m.

The strong horizontal velocity of aerdisc® is utilised to full-effect by positioning one unit at the inlet to entrain the influent in the oxygen-rich plume and another to bisect the outlet. Any flow trying to reach the outlet is sent back around again.

aerdisc® aerators create circulation within the pond to utilise the entire volume, PREVENT SHORT-CIRCUITING and MAXIMISE RESIDENCE TIME.

IT’S NOT ALL HARD WORK!

Tradeshows certainly do require a big effort but they’re also a great opportunity for the team to have some fun.

The Water New Zealand Conference & Expo in Hamilton last week was no exception.

Just because they could, the engineering team in Wanaka built a half-scale aquaturbo® Model AER-AS aerator out of MDF and multiple 1/10th scale giveaway models. Both versions attracted a constant stream of interest.

The beer tasted good after the stand was complete and the aerdisc® aerator assembled on the front lawn.

Thanks to everyone who joined in the fun.

AERDISC® IN A NUTSHELL

This image shows an aerdisc® operating at Ruapehu District Council’s Ohakune WWTP. It has not missed a beat since installation in 2022.

It clearly illustrates aerdisc® in a nutshell.
–     Outstanding oxygen dispersion
–     Negligible spray
–     Zero ragging
–     No backflow

The Lateral Spar spanning between the floats is a key design feature of aerdisc® because it performs multiple functions. It literally is the backbone of the pontoon structure because it allows a completely open discharge, while countering the thrust generated by the aerator in operation. The Lateral Spar also allows each float to move independently of the other, during startup and operation, while remaining perfectly parallel.

AERIS GLOBAL MOUNTING SYSTEM IS A GAME-CHANGER FOR OXIDATION DITCH AERATORS

The removable Mounting Frame allows installation and removal of the aerator while the plant remains online. The Mounting Frame creates a square opening in the endcap of sufficient size to allow the aerator impeller to pass through.

Enclosed endcaps on oxidation ditches are intended to contain aerosols and prevent odour migration but in-doing-so they can limit the supply of atmospheric gases, particularly if lane curtains are installed in the opening between the endcap and the water level. Surface aerators require a continuous supply of air to function effectively.

The Aeris Global Mounting System includes four lamella plate cassettes allowing unrestricted supply of air to feed the aerator impeller but prevent splash from escaping.

Upon removal, the entire assembly is placed on a Support Platform, purpose-designed to accept the Mounting Frame. Following placement, unrestricted access to the aerator is available for personnel to perform tasks such as disassembly, inspection, adjustment and maintenance.

An insertable Yoke allows the drive to be disconnected and removed while the impeller remains in position but above the flow of water in the ditch.

Aeris Global® has manufactured the Aerator Mounting System for aquaturbo® AER-GD aerators in multiple sizes from 22kW to 160kW. 220kW and 300kW versions have been recently developed for a project in West Australia.

Aeris Global use and recommend Hansen Industrial Gearboxes and WEG Electric Motors.

SOUTH ISLAND DISTRICT COUNCILS EMBRACE AERDISC®

So far, 12 of 19 District Councils in the South Island have aerdisc® Directional Aerators either in operation, or in progress.

Just 26-months after the first aerdisc® installation for Central Otago District Council at their Cromwell WWTP, South Island local government projects have grown to 27 with many others pending.

4 of the 27 units were provided as part of the Nationwide Local Government Pilot Study; 6 others were provided for subsequent trials. 17 units were purchased outright.

BOOST WWTP PLANT CAPACITY Extend Plant Life and Delay Major Upgrades

Many wastewater treatment plants suffer from the same issues: high-energy, low-efficiency aerators, poor mixing, and short-circuiting.

Replacement of out-moded aerators with modern, high-efficiency aerators can dramatically reduce energy consumption and boost plant capacity.

Prevention of short-circuiting can provide the greatest improvement in process performance.

Together, efficient aerators and short-circuit prevention can increase plant capacity and extend plant life, delaying or even avoiding the need for new construction.

Contact Aeris Global to discover how advanced aerators can extend the life of your WWTP.

NZ AERDISC® INSTALLATIONS SOAR AFTER PILOT STUDY

Just 2-years after the first Pilot Study aerdisc® was installed at the Cromwell Wastewater Treatment Plant, New Zealand installations, currently, exceed 70 with new projects being added at an increasingly rapid rate.

Aeris Global allocated 14 units for the nationwide local government Pilot Study and all 14 units were purchased by the host site.

The Pilot Study concept has proven to be a very effective means of trialing a new technology because the Pilot Study partner had the right to purchase, but not the obligation.

The Pilot Study provided the host with the opportunity to prove the effectiveness of the product and its suitability for their application during the 6-month Pilot Study period, so it effectively removed all forms of risk.

TWO SIMPLE CHANGES INCREASE WWTP CAPACITY

As we visit pond-based wastewater treatment plants throughout Australasia, we see the same issues at multiple sites:
–     High-energy, low-efficiency aerators
–     Poor mixing and short-circuiting

Many plants are suffering from low DO and yet paying huge energy bills.

Retiring end-of-life or outmoded aerators and replacing with modern high-efficiency aerators can dramatically reduce energy consumption and boost plant capacity.

Short-circuiting can also have a huge impact on the performance of any flow-through pond system because it equates to a reduction in process volume. Prevention of short-circuiting can provide the single greatest jump in process performance.

The combined effect of efficient aerators and prevention of short-circuiting will increase plant capacity and can extend plant life.

Increased capacity can delay and, in some cases, avoid construction of new plants.

AERDISC® TRANSFORMS ASHBURTON WWTP

Seven aerdisc® Directional Aerators have been installed at Ashburton District Councils, Wilkins Road Wastewater Treatment Plant over the last three months. Three in the oxidation pond and four in the aeration basin.

Previously, the aeration basin had Qty 10 x 7.5kW incline-shaft aerators, each including a side-channel blower, for a total energy of over 80kW, but even so the plant continually suffered from low DO and major short-circuiting issues.

Upon installation of only four 7.5kW aerdisc® aerators with a total energy of only 30kW, the DO jumped and short-circuiting was eliminated.

AERDISC® RELIABILITY IMPRESSES AT CROMWELL WWTP

Two-years on from installation in June 2022 aerdisc® continues to impress with zero downtime.

aerdisc® replaced equipment with extremely low oxygen transfer efficiency and exceptionally high-power consumption. It also proved unreliable, expensive to maintain and prone to ragging.

The original system consisted of fifteen diffused air bubblers, arrayed around the edge of the two ponds. Each unit was fitted with two side-channel blowers. The total energy consumed by the thirty blowers was 93kW!

The bubblers were unable to lift the DO above 0.2mg/L, even with all 93kW in operation.

By comparison, five 7.5kW aerdisc® aerators, with a total energy of only 37.5kW, easily meet the oxygen demand with capacity to spare.

Within 24-hours of the first aerdisc® starting in Pond 1, the DO climbed to 2.5mg/L. After the second unit came online the DO jumped to 5mg/L and continued to rise until control was introduced.

NEW PRODUCT LAUNCH AT OZWATER’24

The latest offering from the Aeris Global design team is otterbuoy®, a pond-friendly sensor float.

The product development is in response to enquiry from clients seeking a safe and efficient means of mounting and accessing sensors in wastewater treatment ponds.

Sensors are easy to mount and access in tanks with vertical walls but less so in earthen constructed ponds with side slope, where water is shallow at the edge.

otterbuoy® features a 6.5m swing-arm designed to extend into the pond and therefore reach out to deeper water. The swing-arm is positioned using two stability cables.

Rather than seeing the side slope as an obstacle Aeris Global engineers elected to use it as a ramp for launching and retrieving otterbuoy®.

otterbuoy® incorporates a trolley base with three-wheels orientated to match the arc scribed by the swing-arm when traversing up or down the side slope. The two stability cables double as draws lines for launch and retrieval.

WIOA Conference leads to first Pasveer Ditch installation

Last week, Aeris Global Field Services installed two aerdisc® Directional Aerators in a Pasveer Ditch at Vincentia STP for Shoalhaven Water.

The journey started when Shoalhaven Water personnel visited Aeris Global at the WIOA Conference in Canberra last November.

aerdisc® was developed primarily for pond-based treatment processes but when approached by Shoalhaven Water about the potential for utilisation in a Pasveer Ditch it warranted investigation.

Aeris Global engineers determined aerdisc® would physically fit in the Vincentia ditch and only minor modifications would be required to replace the standard swingarm with a cable mooring system.

Upon startup the results were virtually immediate with a dramatic increase in ditch velocity compared to the three adjacent ditches.

In the following days operators determined the aeration time could be halved due to the superior oxygen transfer efficiency of aerdisc®.

Please enquire about trial units for pond and ditch applications. If you have a site where low DO, odour, ragging, or short-circuiting is a problem, please consider trialing an aerdisc® and evaluating the results on a try-before-you-buy basis.

Aeris Global Field Services will mechanically install the trial aerator. At the conclusion of the 6-month trial the host will have the right to purchase, but not the obligation.

aerdisc efficiency provides massive energy savings

Aeration energy often accounts for the greatest consumption of electricity in a wastewater treatment plant.

Aeration equipment with poor efficiency accounts for the greatest waste of electricity in a wastewater treatment plant.

Inefficient aerators can commit end users to decades of excessive power consumption because often there is a reluctance to retire equipment whilst it remains serviceable.

Enormous power savings are achievable when modern, high-efficiency aeration technologies are introduced.

aerdisc is often three or four times more efficient than the outmoded equipment it replaces.

Oxygen transfer efficiency is measured in kgO2/kWh, so every percentage gain in efficiency equates to the same percentage reduction in electricity consumption.

Two recent posts describe energy savings of 72% at Waitaki DC and 68% at Central Otago DC. Even more remarkable is the dramatic increase in DO and overall plant performance, whilst achieving the energy savings.

Ozwater’23: 4-weeks to go!

Aeris Global Australia Pty Ltd will celebrate opening of the Melbourne office by exhibiting at Ozwater’23 in Sydney.

The exhibition will include the Australian launch of aerdisc® Directional Aerator and will feature the aquaturbo® AER-AS Floating Surface Aerator.

The nationwide aerdisc® Pilot Study in New Zealand has been a resounding success with 100% of completed trials resulting in the partners purchasing the trial aerators, and many purchasing in multiples.

The unique capabilities of aerdisc® make it a gamechanger for lagoon aeration. aerdisc® sets new standards of oxygen transfer, resulting in massive energy savings; has no capacity to rag, nor scour the floor of earthen lagoons, and is purpose-designed to prevent short-circuiting.

aquaturbo® AER-AS Floating Surface Aerator is undoubtedly the world’s leading direct-drive surface aerator and has been since it was designed 48-years ago by Belgium based, Aquasystems International NV. The unique and easily identifiable horizontal discharge is as relevant today as it was at the time of its creation. To this day, nothing aerates like aquaturbo®!

aerdisc® transforms Cromwell WWTP for Central Otago DC with 68% less energy!

In 2017 Central Otago District Council upgraded their Cromwell oxidation ponds. This included installation of fifteen aerators. Over the years these proved ineffective and resulted in low dissolved oxygen being recorded in the ponds almost all year round.

The equipment had extremely low oxygen transfer efficiency and exceptionally high-power consumption. It also proved unreliable, expensive to maintain and prone to ragging.

The system consisted of fifteen diffused air bubblers, arrayed around edge of the two ponds. Each unit was fitted with two side-channel blowers. The total energy consumed by the thirty blowers was 93kW!

Upon takeover by Fulton Hogan, CODC’s operations contractor, it was apparent the bubblers were unable to lift the DO above 0.2mg/L, even with all 93kW in operation.

Considering the situation, Aeris Global offered to provide CODC with two 7.5kW aerdisc® Directional Aerators as part of a nationwide Pilot Study, which was about to commence, even though all other plants were provided only one aerdisc®.
CODC duly accepted the offer and during June 2022 the units were installed, and the 6-month Pilot Study commenced.

Within 24-hours of the first aerator starting, the DO climbed to 2.5mg/L. After the second unit came online the DO jumped to 5mg/L and continued to rise until automated control was applied.

Ian Evans, Water Services Manager, Central Otago DC comments as follows:

“We have had two 7.5kW aerdiscs running in our primary pond at Cromwell for seven months. Dissolved oxygen levels have increased significantly, and we have seen no evidence of ragging on the discs even though the plant has been running without an efficient inlet screen for some time. At the end of the trial, we purchased the two aerators and ordered an additional three: four duty and one standby. We are confident these will provide us with all aeration requirements moving forward”.

aerdisc® aerator impresses at two Waitaki DC plants

Thomas Prins, the Operations Supervisor, at Waitaki District Council is impressed with the performance of aerdisc® Directional Aerators; the first installed as part of the nationwide Pilot Study, and the second as an outright purchase:

“The aerdisc® aerator installed at Palmerston WWTP has significantly increased the DO even when operating only at night. Our old cage aerators were running 24/7. The plant is unscreened, but the aerator does not rag up at all, on any moving parts.

The bearings are sealed and do not require any maintenance. The swivel mounting bracket makes it very easy to pull the aerator to the side of the pond for access.

The second 7.5kW aerdisc® purchased for one of our larger oxidation ponds at Oamaru WWTP has allowed us to remove one of our old 27kW aspirator aerators.”

Both aerdisc® aerators are performing above expectations”.

Emergency aeration system at Bromley WWTP is up and running.

Aeris Global commissioned the 600kW system last week as an emergency response following a tragic fire at the plant last November, which destroyed two trickling filters.

As an interim solution Christchurch City Council elected to convert two of their 49m diameter clarifiers to high-energy, aerobic reactors and awarded this contract to Aeris Global.

Aeris Global has previously acknowledged the tremendous support provided by Aquaturbo Systems, WEG, and TR Industries, which made this project possible in the extraordinarily tight time-frame but in this post, we would like to acknowledge the client.

The commitment by council and their advisors to fast-track this project was outstanding. The decision-making and expedited approval process is a credit to all involved.

Special thanks to seipp Construction and melray Electric.

Aeris Global is proud to have been involved in this project.

Aeris Global installs emergency aeration for Christchurch City ahead of schedule.

Following the devastating fire at Bromley WWTP last November, council elected to convert two of their 49m diameter clarifiers to high-energy, aerobic reactors.

Aeris Global was awarded the contract in December on the proviso the system was operational by the end of March.

The contract includes design, supply, and installation of a 600kW emergency aeration system consisting of eight 75kW aquaturbo® Model AER-AS Floating Surface Aerators along with a proprietary aercable® Safe Access, Cable Management System.

With exceptional support from Aquaturbo Systems, WEG, and TR Industries, Aeris Global successfully delivered the equipment to site in February!

The logistical challenge involved airfreighting 14-tonnes of equipment from USA, Brazil and Australia with numerous ancillary components coming from NZ suppliers or manufactured by Aeris Global in Wanaka.

Aeris Global Field Services installed the system this week.

Aeris Global commence aerdisc® field trials

The latest product development from Aeris Global commenced full-scale field trials yesterday on a picture-perfect Wanaka day.

The Field Services crew tested the pre-production aerdisc® in perpendicular and inline configurations and it performed without a hitch.

Production of 15 x 7.5kW aerdisc® aerators for the nationwide local government Pilot Study can now commence.

The 15 units will be installed at 13 host sites throughout New Zealand and will run for 6-months.

Christchurch City contracts Aeris Global to provide emergency response to fire damaged Bromley WWTP.

Stage One of the response involves the conversion of two 49m diameter clarifiers into high-energy reactors.

600kW of 75kW aquaturbo Model AER-AS Floating Surface Aerators will be installed with two coming from Aeris Global stock in NZ and the other six being manufactured by Aquaturbo Systems Inc. USA.

When made aware of the crisis, the Arkansas based aeration specialist kindly agreed to come to the aid of Christchurch City. They jumped production of the aerators to the front of the cue and agreed to continue work through the festive period with completion scheduled for mid-January.

Brazil based WEG, and local partners TR Industries, also leapt to support the city by expediting the production of electric motors for the aerators.

14-tonnes of equipment will be airfreighted to NZ during January in readiness for installation and commissioning in February by the Aeris Global Field Services team.

aerdisc® Directional Aerator PRODUCTION UPDATE

Injection mould tooling for the 60-degree disc segment is on schedule for commencement of mould trials next month. The tool, weighing over 1,800kg, is through the preliminary stages of the build and is due to start bench core and bench cavity stages this week.

Six interconnected segments form a 1,000mm diameter disc and key to a tubular shaft via laser cut penetrations to control the disc spacing and pattern.

The unique disc shape is engineered to maximise the potential to collect and release air as well as generate horizontal velocity.

The operating principle involves a continuous cycle of harvesting atmospheric gases and dissolving oxygen as the partially immersed disc rotates.

aerdisc® is designed for connection to a swing-arm using any one of three configurations to control the vector of thrust.

aerdisc® is coming!

aerdisc® Disc Aerator is the latest product development from the fertile minds of the Aeris Global design team. There is huge demand in the market for an efficient, directional aerator capable of operation in shallow, earthen constructed lagoons.

aerdisc® is a horizontal shaft aerator rotating at low-speed through a direct-drive, shaft-mounted reducer. aerdisc® floats on pontoons for ease of installation and to ensure constant disc immersion regardless of water level variation.

The unique shape of the injection moulded, segmental disc is the result of extensive CFD study and full-scale tank testing at the Aeris Global test facility in Wanaka. The operating principle involves a continuous cycle of harvesting atmospheric gases and dissolving oxygen as the partially immersed disc rotates.

aerdisc® is scheduled for release during Q3 of this year. Watch this space!

NEW PRODUCT UPDATE – First shots out of the mould.

aercable® Planetary Winch is one step closer to production following arrival of sample mouldings.

The product features a two-piece injection moulded reel with integral planetary ring gear. The planet gears are also injection moulded but in a dissimilar material.

The 3:1 ratio winch is designed for retrieval and repositioning of floating aerators and mixers. The product development is driven by an ongoing desire to mitigate risk of personal harm and improve efficiency by reducing the physical effort required to move equipment.

It is designed for attachment to the aerisanchor®- Multi-function Mooring System and to davits mounted on the otterdock® – Safe Docking Platform.

The winch includes an auto-spooling device to evenly lay cable on the reel and dual tension rollers to keep it in place.

Is your WWTP due for a birthday?

Does it suffer from oxygen deficiency; poor oxygen dispersion and mixing; odour and noise problems?

There are many reasons why an aeration upgrade may be necessary, but typically involve one or more of the following:

– Oxygen shortfall may be a result of existing aerators being outmoded or inoperable.

– Perhaps the flow and loading’s have increased and now exceed the design capacity of the plant.

– Or maybe seasonal or diurnal peaks have changed.

An aeration upgrade can provide multiple benefits:
1. Increase aeration capacity often without increasing energy
2. Extend plant life or delay expansion
3. Reduce maintenance and downtime
4. Reduce noise and odour

Aeration upgrades can almost always be installed whilst the plant remains online.

Aeris Global will work with your preferred consultant, operations contractor or directly with the end-user.
